Toner Shark Scammers are circling!
There are several shady “toner shark” scammers that call your office fishing for information about your copier models so they can ship you toner along with an invoice. This is a friendly reminder that we will not call you asking questions about your equipment model to match up toner part numbers! We have all of the information necessary to fulfil your toner orders.
Toner Shark Example Conversation
Here is an example of how a conversation may go with a toner shark. We had a scammer call us, the supplier, and try to trick our administrative staff. The person gave their name said they were with a Document Solutions company.
Caller: I am calling Platinum Copiers to get the model of the machine you are currently using so we can be of assistance, when needed.
Me: (Knowing this was odd, I went along) “We have several models”
Caller: I just need one of them.
Me: Why do you need this information?
Caller: For my list.
Me: What List?
Caller: List of those Customer’s we provide toner to.
Me: Did you mean to call someone else, because we are a Dealer and get supplies from our Distributor.
Caller: No! I am calling Platinum Copiers to get the model number of the machine.
Me: I do not see the reason to give that information. Again, what do you need this info for?
Caller: (more aggressive tone) MY LIST!! I just need ONE copier Model. Can you please give that to me?
Me: No Sir, we maintain our equipment and have toner in inventory for our units.
Don’t get bitten by a Toner Shark
Their opening line seems very convincing and could easily cause you to fall into a trap, when these people call back with accurate equipment information. They get you to agree to the toner shipment and then bill you for said toner. Being that 99% of our customers have their toner and maintenance covered by an agreement with us, you should never pay outright for toner if you’re covered under one of our agreements.

I had the pleasure of working with Marisol and Walter today for our printing needs. We have had a few interactions with Platinum Copiers and all have been great, however Marisol and Walter went above and beyond and were very professional during the visit. We were having issues printing with color and not only did they fix that issue, but we are now set up to have our ink auto renewed when it gets low. That is a huge bonus for our company and we were not aware that capability was available for the printer.
